When Boyz II Men meets Asian music

March 30, 2009 By: Matthew Ho Category: music

First there was Eminem – white guy rapping. Then there was Jin – Asian Guy rapping. Now there’s this dude!

He’s a black dude that can sing Chinese! Fuses that Joe / Boyz 2 Men style with Jay Chou style!

It’s pretty cool! He can speak much better Chinese (that I would ever hope).

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y19vv0ZEMPU]

Apparently, from what I can gather from the Youtube comments his name is “Haoge” and he is from Liberia.

How funny are these youtube comments (spelling left unchanged for authenticity)

“is that jason richardson from the golden state warriors singing in chinese??”

“Probably noy ethnically Chinese, so kudos to his Chinese. Pretty good.”

“african people can sing everything and make it sounds good:)”

“the wrong!! the iam balck!! and black people dont sing chines!! bcz in the ghetto !! you have just 1 chance!! baby!! and G-CODE !! song will show alot of thing just write g code and press the first song!!!!NE HAO”

Brilliant Music Videos – First Asian Boy and Daft Punk

March 28, 2009 By: Matthew Ho Category: Fun, humour, music, video, youtube

First up is this one my buddy Will shared on facebook, which is a parody of Estelle’s American Boy.

It’s called “First Asian Boy”, and I’m digging his style:

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3ZQty7I1aw]

This guy has got 1.2 million views on youtube so its doing very well!

Second video I found whilst surfing the web called “Daft Bodies”. It’s Daft Punk’s “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger”. It’s genuis!

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bl6RJyZdBSU]

It listed in the Daft Punk Youtube Channel, but I don’t think its an official Daft Punk vid as I’ve seen the cartoon one (also very good). It’s more of a fan vid. Very simple, yet highly effective and creative!

If you are into Daft Punk, I would highly recommend this idaft. It has a console with different words. You tap the buttons on the console with your keyboard and recreate the song’s chorus. Very cool!

I’m out like being an Asian Boy,

the ultimate blog: the fail blog

March 22, 2009 By: Matthew Ho Category: Social networking, Websites you should check out, humour, social media, video, wordpress

Rarely do I come across something so funny and so well done. The fail blog is da bomb as it has pictures and videos of fail situations. It’s titled “FAIL Blog: Pictures and Videos of Owned, Pwnd and Fail Moments“. All it has is a very simple layout with pictures and vids, and a bunch of social media links to digg, stumbleupon, etc.. to rate it. It might be simple, but by golly does it do it well!

If you hadn’t realised, the word “fail” and “epic fail” has slowly crept into our vocab. I’m not sure where it came from, as well as the words “Owned”, “Pwnd”, but I recall friends using it ages ago when referring to computer games moments in Warcraft, Counterstrike, etc… So that could be the origin and now its in everyday use. Anyhow, prepare to ROFL with these pics from the fail blog

I found this blog via the “top blogs today” section within wordpress. There was also “fastest growing blogs”, and top posts”, etc… I have seen them all the time, but I never looked at them or clicked through. I think I might start doing that now! It’s a form of social media recommendation similar to Digg or Stumbleupon as you can see what blogs are popular.

AFL v NRL 2009 season launch ads

March 22, 2009 By: Matthew Ho Category: advertising, sports, video, youtube

NRL has started and is now in round 2, and the AFL is about to kick off. What better way than to show case both season launch ads. Now I’m not an AFL fan, other than a Sydney Swans supporter by virtue of being from Sydney. However, I do  think that the AFL ad is better. C’mon NRL, step yo game up!

Everything You Know About Web Design Is Wrong

March 21, 2009 By: Matthew Ho Category: events, social media, video, website design, youtube

This is a good video about web design from SXSW (South by Southwest Festival). It’s all about the user – you need to start with them and end with them in your planning. This guy argues its not about the “elastic user” but rather its about the “specific user”, which kinda flies against the thinking of cloud computing. Because cloud computing suggests that the user can come from anywhere and you have to cater for anyone from anywhere.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIRbQB4O45M]

Another good video from SXSW is about designing community pages for the wisdom of crowds (yes, its that book!). It’s not the actual author but someone who is applying those ideas to online.

How can you control social media? You can’t!

March 21, 2009 By: Matthew Ho Category: Legal, Websites you should check out, facebook, social media, twitter

I can understand that legal authorities did not not want the details for the suspected arsonist’s for the Victorian bushfire to be published. You can tell traditional media like print, tv, radio not to say anything because there are regulations and perfectly legitimate reasons. You don’t want to prejudice the trial if people see the name and face and make decisions based on prior information.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzGNXflnQ9k]

How do  you expect to control what people put on facebook? It’s idiotic to think so. To control the public en masse as to what they publish on facebook is not only difficult but impossible. People will talk about anything online and anywhere. People will update via facebook, tweet it, blog, etc…. As Laura Papworth suggests to shut down one network is to only force the conversation to move elsewhere. I must say in defence of the lawyer (defending a criminal defense lawyer!), he is right about some aspects re child pornography. If someone makes a child pornography page then it should be shut down by facebook. But I’m sure this is part of the terms of service, that you won’t do anything illegal on facebook. Of course publishing the details of the arsonists is also illegal, but I don’t see how you can put the responsibility on the ISP’s or social networks.

Will the real Stephen Conroy please stand up?

March 18, 2009 By: Matthew Ho Category: business, politics, twitter

I came across the article today – its pretty funny.

Twitter impersonations are a problem on Twitter, but at least this one was obvious and very witty. It’s a fake twitter account of Stephen Conroy, Communications Minister.

Read about it here and on mumbrella.

Jim Cramer & tulipomania

March 18, 2009 By: Matthew Ho Category: business, finance, wiki, youtube

I really like this video which unspy posted on my blog earlier.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRKc_-VqJm0]

To me its just not fair that hedge funds and corporations can manipulate the stockmarket. It’s the notion that there is no such thing as “market correction” or equilibrium. I believe George Soros said this as well in his book. It’s not a science because there’s humans involved.

Financial market regulation was an area I could not ignore in my studies as a lawyer and accountant. In fact, I did a thesis on it =P Shenanigans and antics pulled by Jim Cramer’s days as hedge fund don’t give normal people a chance in the stock market. They’re shifting huge piles of money around in back rooms to create artificial lifts in stock prices or spreading rumours to make a stock go down. Essentially, they are screwing with people’s money and the overral stock market. It’s nothing new, its always been going on.

The fact is that some CEO’s have lied and financial reporter’s don’t do enough digging around to reveal the truth. Financial reports don’t necessarily tell the truth either – sometimes the real info is hidden deep in the notes or in off balance sheet financing and never reported. If it is so opaque what trust do we have in financial markets? There always seem to be a hidden truth and unbelieveable faith that things will get better and an ideal of constant growth.

It’s tulipomania all over again. Check this from wikipedia:

“Tulip mania or tulipomania (Dutch names include tulpenmanie, tulpomanie, tulpenwoede, tulpengekte, and bollengekte) was a period in the Dutch Golden Age during which contract prices for bulbs of the newly introduced tulip reached extraordinarily high levels and then suddenly collapsed.[2] At the peak of tulip mania in February 1637, tulip contracts sold for more than 10 times the annual income of a skilled craftsman. It is generally considered the first recorded speculative bubble.[3] The term “tulip mania” is often used metaphorically to refer to any large economic bubble”

Creative Lego ads – brings back childhood memories!

March 17, 2009 By: Matthew Ho Category: advertising, branding

I love lego. I used to love the big lego exhibitions in the city, which my parents used to take me to as a kid. You would see  these crazy lego sculptures and wonder how people made them (and how they were held together!)

And these ads are so clever! Some of them are very simple but so witty and funny. Minimalist is the key.

Call to legislate internet privacy and Google’s new interest based advertising

March 15, 2009 By: Matthew Ho Category: Legal, Search Engine Links, Websites you should check out, advertising

After my Advertising and marketing meets Johnny Law post, two interesting things have emerged on internet privacy. Check out the news from the NY times blog and the Google public policy blog (one of my favourite blogs to read).

I’ve copied some of the more pertinent parts of the article below.

——————-

Call to Legislate Internet Privacy

The debate on Internet privacy has begun in Congress.

Rick Boucher
Phil McCarten/Reuters
Representative Rick Boucher

I had a chance to sit down recently with Representative Rick Boucher, the long-serving Virginia Democrat, who has just replaced Ed Markey, the Democrat from Massachusetts, as the chairman of the House Subcommittee looking after telecommunications, technology and the Internet. Mr. Boucher is widely regarded as one of the most technologically savvy members of Congress……..

But high on his list is a topic that is very much under his discretion: passing a bill to regulate the privacy of Internet users.

“Internet users should be able to know what information is collected about them and have the opportunity to opt out,” he said.

While he hasn’t written the bill yet, Mr. Boucher said that he, working with Representative Cliff Stearns, the Florida Republican who is the ranking minority member on the subcommittee, wants to require Web sites to disclose how they collect and use data, and give users the option to opt out of any data collection. That’s not a big change from what happens now, at least on most big sites.

But in what could be a big change from current practice, Mr. Boucher wants sites to get explicit permission from users — an “opt in” — if they are going to share information with other companies.

“I think that strikes the right balance,” he said. “Web site operators are very concerned that if they have an opt-in regime for the internal marketing of the Web site themselves it would be very disruptive. The default position of most Internet users will be not to check any boxes at all. It is a very different matter if the site takes the information and sells it to gain revenue.”

I spoke to Mr. Boucher on the day that Google announced its new plan to track data about customers for advertising. And I asked him about such behavioral targeting, which presents an ad based on what you did on other sites.

For the rest of it here

Google’s announcement on interest based advertising

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUkm_gKgdQc]

 Check out this article on Google’s new privacy controls here and Google’s take on it via their public policy blog. This is exactly the point I was making in my post about relevancy of advertising v privacy of information:

“In her post to the Official Google Blog this morning, Susan Wojcicki, VP of Product Management, announced that we are making interest-based advertising available in beta for our AdSense partner sites and YouTube. Interest-based advertising uses information about the web pages people visit to make the online ads they see more relevant. Relevant advertising, in turn, has fueled the content, products and services available on the Internet today.

Providing such advertising has proven to be a challenging policy issue for advertisers, publishers, internet companies and regulators over the last decade. On the one hand, well-tailored ads benefit consumers, advertisers, and publishers alike. On the other hand, the industry has long struggled with how to deliver relevant ads while respecting users’ privacy.”

I will discuss it in more detail when I get my head around all this information.
